What is Ju- Jitsu?
In medieval Japan there where various Arts and exercises in which the Samurai were trained, amongst these was the art of Ju Jitsu.
The word Ju Jitsu translated means ‘The Gentle Art' the art of gaining victory or success by yielding or pliancy. It's main principle being not to match strength with strength, but to utilize the strength of the attacker by redirecting or yielding to that force.
The Art developed from the need to capture the enemy. Since the warriors wore armour many strikes where ineffective, so methods of throwing and joint manipulation were developed. In present day Japan and in the Western Civilisations, Ju Jitsu has once again gained popularity and is used as an excellent sport and tool for personal development but also indeed as a proven method of self-defence.
When practising Ju Jitsu techniques there are many methods of gaining the advantage over the opponent, such as throwing techniques one associate with Judo, holding a person or immobilising an opponent by using locks of wrist and of the arms, legs or joints so that they comply or stop their aggressive advances. These types of moves are often practised and associated with Aikido. There are specialist schools, which practice the arts of Atemi and Kuatsu. Atemi is the art of attacking specific parts of the body. Kuatsu is the art or resuscitation for those rendered unconscious.
Thus we see that as the mother of Japanese Martial Arts Ju Jitsu offers a tremendous range of activities to choose from and develop. It is for criterion that the system offers the educationalist the opportunity to choose and select to meet his/her personal requirements and those of the students.
